Saturable Bragg reflector (SBR) mode-locked Er-doped fiber lasers around 1550nm
with a repetition rate of 1GHz are demonstrated. Key steps to obtain stable, femtosecond pulses by
avoiding thermal damage of the SBR are discussed. © 2010 The Optical Society
