Syllabus

7.02 is a laboratory course introducing you to experimental techniques in microbiology, biochemistry, and cell biology. 7.02 emphasizes integrating factual knowledge with understanding the design of experiments and data analysis. The course is divided into four modules:

  • Genetics
  • Protein Biochemistry
  • Recombinant DNA Methods
  • Development

Each model introduces you to different experimental techniques and approaches. Although the techniques used in these modules may appear different, many of the underlying theoretical concepts are similar. The skills you learn in 7.02 will be very important should you later enter any research environment, or go on to graduate or medical school.

Prerequisites
7.01x (any class, i.e., 7.012, 7.013, etc.)
7.03 or 7.05 (previous or concurrent enrollment suggested but not required)
Recommended Texts

These texts are recommended, but not required for the course.

  • Maloy, Cronan, Freifelder, Microbial Genetics
  • Moran, Biochemistry
  • Gilbert, Developmental Biology
Lab Manual
The lab manual contains the background and experiments for each module of the course. Manuals will be provided at the beginning of each module
Lab Notebook

You must maintain a laboratory notebook. This notebook must be bound with numbered pages and contain carbons. Loose sheets of paper or data recorded on scraps of paper which are to be recopied into a notebook later will not be accepted.
